How I started in Scouts

When I was eight, I followed my older brother to Cubs, beginning my involvement in scouting. We were living in Perth and my time in Cubs at 1st Kelmscott was one of the best parts of my scouting, with a great group of Cub Leaders. When we moved to Sydney I started scouts (1st Winston Hills), and I continued through scouts when we moved to Melbourne (firstly 7th Cheltenham and then 2nd/6th Mordialloc). Besides short stints in other groups to join Venturers and Rovers, I have been involved in 2nd/6th Mordialloc (Mentone) for nearly all the time I have lived in Melbourne.

Rovering Career

I was invested as a Rover Squire in July 2001, in the Sir Dallas Brooks Rover Crew; in that Crew I was able to take on the roles of Secretary, Deputy Crew Leader, and Treasurer. I am currently a member of my Group crew at 2nd/6th Mordialloc, where we are working towards re-establishing the Ion L Idriess Rover Crew.

Within the South Metro Region Rover Council, I have had a term as Training & Development Officer and Surfmoot Rep in 2003-04, and Treasurer for MARB 2004. In 2003, two of us (with no prior experience) decided to lead the Australian Contingent to the 61st New Zealand Rover Moot, Gumboot Moot. Attending a NZ Moot is an eye opening experience; I can not recommend it highly enough. Surfmoot, Victoria’s annual summer moot, has been one of my favourite events, and I have been lucky enough to be Assistant Marketing Officer for several events.

In 2002, I attended his first Branch Rover Council. At the end of this year, I was elected Deputy Chairman; I also filled the role of Training & Development Officer for a period in addition to this. In March 2004, I was elected Chairman of the Victorian Branch Rover Council, a position I held for two years. In various roles on the VicBRC, I have had the chance to organise and participate in several forums and conferences, including Biennial conferences, ‘Restoring the Passion’ and two years as Vic Delegation Leader to NRC.

I was lucky enough to lead the Vic Branch Rover Council through a significant period of change. VicRovers moved from Scout HQ to our own purpose built Rover Centre, and we were able to drive the outcomes and setup so the Victorian Rover Centre was of most benefit to the section. It was also the first term under our new Advisor and admin arrangements, but we were able to keep VicRovers moving upwards and onwards during this transition.

I also participated in Tassiemoot in 2005, an awesome experience! The Adventure Tour (caving, rock climbing, sea-kayaking, hiking, white water rafting, mountain biking etc) was my moot activity of choice, providing an opportunity to participate in some great activities in spectacular natural environments. On retiring from the Chairman’s role, I volunteered as Administration Officer for the VicBRC to fill the gap, finalised their latest Policy Book upgrade and organised the 2007 National Rover Council.

At the NRC meeting in 2007, I was elected as the NRC Chairman, along with a great team of Alyssa and Rhian. The two NRC Exec teams have left us with some great resources and projects to run with, and we are excited about assisting Australian Rovers to start a few new challenges this year. This is a great time for Australian Rovering; we are keen to build on our past successes, as well as make the changes to keep it growing into the future.

How I Started In Scouts

The Short and sweet version:

I’m a member of Wellington Rover Crew in Tasmania.
TBRC Vice Chair 2006
TBRC Secretary 2004,2005
NRC delegate 2005,2006, 2007
I’ve also made an appearance at Tassie Moot and I am moot in NZ

What I love about Rovering

The friends, the fun and the fact that no matter where you go rovers look out for one another.

Aims and Thoughts

Get Involved, you can learn so much and makes heaps of lifelong friends along the way. This year I’m here to support and encourage all rovers to take a more active role, whether it be at a local, state or national level. I also plan to represent NRC and communicate with all branches and crews so that all rovers are kept up to date with what is going on.

How I Started In Scouts

My Scouting career began as a natural family progression, with most of the family involved in Scouting in some way. I began in Cubs with Kama Scout group, and continued to develop my Scouting skills over the next few years in Scouts and Venturers completing my Queen’s Scout award. I was involved in local District and Branch Councils for Venturers. Along the way I’ve learnt more than I can remember, and have had an immense amount of fun, which has continued in my time in Rovering.

Rovering Career

Secretary/Member – Scouts Australia Inaugural National Youth Council (2001-2003)
Basic Sectional Techniques – Cub Section 2003, currently completing Woodbadge
Australian Delegate for Queen’s Golden Jublilee Queen’s Scout Parade at Windsor Castle 2002
Communications Manager ‘Extreme’ Venture A.C.T. 2003
Crew Leader and Assistant Crew Leader – Blue Water Rover Crew (2003-2006)
VIP Function Team Member Woodhouse Jamboree 2004
Canberra Gang Show PR Manager 2005, Photographer, 2006
Secretary – 1st Australian Rover Crew (AV06) (2006)
Basic Sectional Techniques – Rover Section 2006
Chair – A.C.T. Branch Rover Council (2006)

Aims and Thoughts

At this point… my aim is to promote the Rover Training Program throughout the Section. Both the Basic and Advanced. While also finding out what makes the majority of Crews work as well as they do, and developing programs to assist Crews that need a bit of a helping hand.
